Tip Tuesday | Stocking Stuffers for Makers

When in doubt, you truly can’t go wrong with the essentials.

Rotary blade refills, Sewline glue, Best Press, mini snips, needle threaders, and stick-n-stitch packs are always a win — practical, thoughtful, and guaranteed to get used.

Shopping for the maker who already has everything? Look to the little luxuries:

Cohana minis, Sarah Hearts labels, Ruby Star Society novelties, zipper pulls, needle minders, and those tiny details that make sewing feel extra special

Stress-free, last-minute gifting made easy — and Santa-approved.

Instructor Spotlight - December 23, 2025 - Kim W

Kim W is a creative force in bag making, known for clean construction, thoughtful finishing techniques, and an encouraging teaching style. This year, she’s expanding her skill set into garment-adjacent projects with the Bella Quilt Coat — a class that blends structure, creativity, and personal style.

Q&A:

How did you get started with bag making?

I’ve been an avid quilter since my son was a baby, and over the years I’ve made more quilts than I can count. But quilts take time — lots of it. When I started working at Out of Hand, I couldn’t help but notice the bag patterns and the beautiful canvas and linen selections and started dreaming about what I could make.

Around that time, my granddaughter was going through cheap backpacks at school like crazy, so I decided to try making one for her. I found a pattern online (I did look at all the patterns in the shop, but none quite fit my exact criteria) and brought her in to pick out her fabric. I made the backpack and swore it would be my last — it was pretty complicated! But the bug had hit. I immediately started dreaming about what I could make next, and Jamie was so supportive in letting me run with my creativity.

What part of teaching the Bella Quilt Coat are you most excited about?

I love seeing the fabric choices students make for their projects. Having now made two very different Bella Quilt Coats myself, I’m especially excited to see how others interpret the pattern and choose fabrics that truly reflect their personal style. Because this class is longer than most, I’m also really hoping to see lots of finished coats — that’s always the best part.

What’s your favourite notion or tool for bag making?

My favourite tool has to be my stiletto/seam ripper. It’s incredibly versatile — perfect for helping thicker layers through the machine and keeping fingers safely out of the way when sewing fiddly bits. A close second is Wonder Clips. Both are absolute essentials for bag making in my mind.
