Featherweight Basic Maintenance - In Studio Class

Skill Level Suggestion: Intermediate - You’re confident in construction techniques and can troubleshoot as needed. You want to refine your accuracy and finish work more professionally. You're very familiar with your Featherweight Machine and comfortable using screwdrivers & handling small parts.

Prerequisite: Featherweight Spa Day

Description

Having taken the Featherweight Spa Day, you will add to your skills by doing some basic maintenance to enhance your knowledge of how things work & keep your Featherweight running smoothly with good stitch formation.

This class can help identify issues that require replacement parts or further maintenance by a credible sewing machine service technician.

All participants must have their own Singer Featherweight sewing machine in working order. (Please no newly acquired machines unless recently serviced/repaired & running well)

Properly fitted screwdrivers are important so that damage does not occur to your Featherweight and parts. It is recommended that you use the Wera screwdrivers we have sourced from the Singer Featherweight Shop and that are sold at Out of Hand Quilting (online & in-store).

What we'll cover:

• Replacing the belt
• Tension Unit dis-assemble, re-assemble & calibration *
• Lower bobbin area– stray thread removal
• Motor brushes – assess & replace (if necessary)
• Foot controller service/adjust
• Adjusting tensions & test sew out (wind a bobbin; thread machine)
• Troubleshooting tips

* only after instructor determines the upper tension unit is in good working condition

Supply List

• Your functioning vintage Singer 221 or 222 model sewing machine (no clones or replicas) with foot controller/power cord (no recently acquired “new to you” machines unless recently serviced/repaired & running well)
  
  
• Wera screwdrivers: (1) small (2) maintenance (3) mid length
  
  
• Manual (if you have one)
  
  
• Any accessories that came with your machine (e.g. flat head screwdriver (s); bobbins)
  
  
• Small flashlight
  
  
• Old bath towel to work on
  
  
• Wear old clothes or bring an apron that can get soiled – there may be old grease/oil that we will be handling
  
  
• Magnetic bowl or equivalent to hold small parts
  
  
• Lint cleaning brush
  
  
• Toothbrush – this is handy to use when scrubbing old grease/oil on interior parts of machine
  
  
• 2 spools of quality cotton thread of 2 different colours (Aurifil, Presencia, Mettler, Guterman brands)
  
  
• Schmetz Microtex sewing machine needles 80/12
  
  
• Empty bobbin
  
  
• Fabric swatches 8” x 4” for test stitch outs
  
  
• Small scissors or thread snips
  
  
• Tweezers
  
  
• Hemostats (optional)
  
  
• Sewing machine oil in EZ Oiler

The Featherweight Basic Maintenance Class is intended to guide basic techniques; however, you assume full responsibility for the condition and upkeep of your machine.

CLASS POLICY

Thank you for choosing Out of Hand Quilting & Fabrics for your creative endeavours! We're excited to have you join our classes and learn new skills. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone, we have established the following store policy regarding class enrollment:

1. Registration: By registering for a class, either online or in-store, you are entering into a contract for participation in that class. We kindly ask that you carefully consider your schedule and availability before enrolling.

2. Class Cancellations + Shop Credit: Class registrations are non-refundable. If you are unable to attend, please let us know as soon as possible. If we are able to fill your spot from the waitlist, you will receive a shop credit for the value of the class. If we are unable to fill your spot, no refund or shop credit will be issued.

3. Transferability: Class registrations are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you cannot transfer your enrollment to another person. 

4. Minimum Class Requirements: Please note that classes have a minimum requirement of participants to cover instructor and staff costs and ensure an enriching learning environment. We will make every effort to meet these requirements and run the class as scheduled. In the event that the minimum class requirement is not met, participants will be notified 1-2 weeks in advance. Only in this instance, a full refund will be issued to those who have already enrolled. We understand that this may be disappointing, but it is necessary to maintain the quality and viability of our classes.

We understand that life can be unpredictable, and we genuinely want to support your passion for creative exploration. We encourage you to reach out to us as soon as possible if you find yourself unable to attend a class you have registered for. This will allow us to explore the possibility of filling your spot from the waitlist and providing you with an in-store credit.
