Skill Level Suggestion: Absolute Beginner - Whether you're a beginner looking to learn the basics or an experienced sewist aiming to refine your technique, this workshop offers comprehensive instruction and hands-on practice in the art of appliqué.

Description

In this 3-hour workshop, you will be introduced to various methods and styles of appliqué, including prepared-edge and needle-turn techniques. We will discuss appropriate fabrics, threads and tools for different appliqué styles and offer tips for troubleshooting common appliqué challenges- those elusive sharp points and valleys! 

Feel free to bring a project you’ve been working on, or Marilyn will provide you with a few simple shapes to get you started.

Supply List

  • Basic sewing including small sharp scissors, pins, thimble (if you use one)

  • Fabric scissors

  • Cotton Fabric scraps in various colours and patterns

  • Applique Needles of your choice. Straw or Milliners needles size 11 recommended. Note: we will discuss needle options in class and they can be purchased at that time

  • Freezer paper

  • Starch product such as Best Press or Flatter and a small paint brush for applying starch to applique shapes

  • Fabric folding pen - suggested, not required

  • Fabric Glue such as Roxanne's glue baste or Appli-glue

  • Sandpaper Board

  • Small iron such as Clover Mini Iron

  • Pressing surface

  • Your choice of threads for applique - 80 weight cotton or 100 weight silk recommended. Thread should be a neutral colour or match your applique pieces. Note: Threads will be discussed in class and can be purchased at that time.

  • 1 x Fat Quarter as a background for applique

  • 0.7mm Mechanical Pencil (propelling pencil) with 2B or 2 Lead (USA) or marking tool of your choice

CLASS POLICY

Thank you for choosing Out of Hand Quilting & Fabrics for your creative endeavours! We're excited to have you join our classes and learn new skills. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone, we have established the following store policy regarding class enrollment:

1. Registration: By registering for a class, either online or in-store, you are entering into a contract for participation in that class. We kindly ask that you carefully consider your schedule and availability before enrolling.

2. Class Cancellations + Shop Credit: Class registrations are non-refundable. If you are unable to attend, please let us know as soon as possible. If we are able to fill your spot from the waitlist, you will receive a shop credit for the value of the class. If we are unable to fill your spot, no refund or shop credit will be issued.

3. Transferability: Class registrations are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you cannot transfer your enrollment to another person. 

4. Minimum Class Requirements: Please note that classes have a minimum requirement of participants to cover instructor and staff costs and ensure an enriching learning environment. We will make every effort to meet these requirements and run the class as scheduled. In the event that the minimum class requirement is not met, participants will be notified 1-2 weeks in advance. Only in this instance, a full refund will be issued to those who have already enrolled. We understand that this may be disappointing, but it is necessary to maintain the quality and viability of our classes.

We understand that life can be unpredictable, and we genuinely want to support your passion for creative exploration. We encourage you to reach out to us as soon as possible if you find yourself unable to attend a class you have registered for. This will allow us to explore the possibility of filling your spot from the waitlist and providing you with an in-store credit.
